Most animal rescues do not have a physical shelter location, and therefore rely on a network of foster homes in order to operate. In fact, many rescues have a greater need for foster homes than for adopters!

What is pet fostering?

A pet foster parent provides a temporary home for the pet until it is adopted. It is the responsibility of the foster parent to care for the pet during this time. The foster parent provides food, water, shelter, basic care, love and affection for the pet while it is in foster care. All vet care is paid for by the rescue, and usually the rescue also provides food, litter and other equipment the pet may need. The duration of the foster period can last anywhere from a few days to several months.

What types of pets can be fostered?

Any type of pet you can think of! Dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, birds, reptiles, rodents, fish, farm animals, exotics and more all are in need of foster homes! You may chose to foster just one pet, or many pets!

Who is fostering good for?

If you're an animal lover that wants to help save the lives of homeless pets in shelters- then fostering may be good for you! If you're a first time pet owner, and you're not sure if owning a certain type of pet is right for you- then fostering may be good for you! If you're a parent of children who want pets, but you're not sure they're ready for the responsibility of pet ownership- then fostering may be good for you! If you'd like a pet, but travel a lot or have to move frequently- then fostering may be good for you! Just about anyone can enjoy the benefits of fostering pets!

What if I get too attached and don't want to give up the pet I'm fostering?

If you grow particularly fond of your foster pet, you can always decide to adopt the pet yourself! And if you decide your foster pet is not the right fit for you, you will be very happy to see your pet go home with the family that you know is the right match.

How do I get started?

If you're interested in fostering, you can join the Pet Foster Network, or contact one of the local rescue groups listed on our Resources page. If you live outside the Triangle area, you can search for rescues near you to contact about fostering!
